Netflix now accounts for 35% of bandwidth usage in the US and Canada

The latest report from the Canadian broadband networking company Sandvine reveals that Netflix is still the king of the American internet. The streaming video service is responsible for a staggering 35% of all bandwidth usage in North America-the next most, YouTube, accounts for only 14%.

A few caveats, though: The data are counted only during peak periods (evenings). The report also only includes fixed bandwidth, meaning internet use via cell phones isn't considered.

HBO Go, the streaming version of the US premium cable channel HBO, just missed the top 10, accounting for 1% of usage. That number will almost certainly go up once a standalone internet version of HBO Go becomes available sometime next year.

Amazon Instant Video is also beginning to pick up steam, though its share is still minuscule compared with Netflix's, and the service is currently not even available in Canada.
