It was previously confirmed that the Galaxy S3 will not receive any further updates after the Android 4.4 KitKat. This means that an official Android 5.0 Lollipop update won't be available for the phone.

However, because of the genius XDA custom Android developers, it is now possible for Samsung Galaxy S3 owners to experience the latest mobile operating system from Google. Recently, an AOSP or Android Open Source Project custom ROM rolled out for the 2012 flagship smartphone from the South Korean tech giant.

According to Android Origin, users who can install Android 5.0 Lollipop update via AOSP ROM are those who have the Exynos variant of the smartphone. Moreover, the model number of the Samsung Galaxy S3 should be GT-I9300. To verify the model, go to Settings > About Phone > Model Number.

The post also noted that the build is unstable yet and since this is an unofficial ROM, users are advised to be very careful when they decide to install Android 5.0 Lollipop update with the use of the AOSP ROM. There are also important prerequisites to meet so there would not be any issues during the process.

The first one has something to do with the battery. The Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 needs to have 80 percent battery level before proceeding to install Android 5.0 Lollipop. This is to simply avoid power interruption process while updating, because otherwise, it can brick or damage the device.

Moreover, Galaxy S3 users needs to create a backup of important data and settings stored on the smartphone. The custom recovery tools such as ClockWorkMod and TWRP can be used for the process. The bootloader of the Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 should also be unlocked.
