TiVo Launches On

PCMag gave the TiVo Roamio Pro high marks when it debuted two months ago. It added more space, more tuners, and more features to the TiVo platform, and introduced place-shifting viewing inside the house.

If you're on the same Wi-Fi network as the Roamio Pro (or TiVo Roamio Plus), you can watch live television or your recordings from any mobile device. Now TiVo is letting you do the same thing out of the house with out-of-home streaming and downloading for the Roamio Pro and Roamio Plus.

This feature has been hotly anticipated, ever since the company launched the Roamio series. It effectively adds full Sling-like functionality (like a cable box with a connected SlingBox, or a Dish Network Hopper with Sling) to the DVR. Users can now watch their recordings or live television out of the home if their iOS device is connected to a Wi-Fi network, or download recordings to their device over their mobile connection.

This feature requires an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 5.1 or later, and you can only stream from the Roamio to one mobile device at a time. The content available can also be restricted based on your cable or satellite provider, which has been an issue since the launch of the TiVo Stream.

TiVo Roamio Pro and Roamio Plus owners will get the automatic, free software upgrade today as the feature rolls out. TiVo plans to add streaming support over 4G/LTE and expand the Android app to support streaming and downloading from the Roamio in 2014.
