Pinterest, Getty Images Sign Deal to Bring More Detailed Info to Pins

It's been a busy week for Pinterest. The company on Friday announced a new deal with Getty Images that will provide more detailed information on the photos users pin on the site.

The deal comes just one day after reports surfaced that Pinterest raised an additional $225 million in funding, bringing the company's valuation as high as $4 billion.

Whenever a user pins a Getty image that's already out there on the web, the metadata that Getty has on file for that image - including the description, photographer and date taken - will appear alongside that photo on the user's pin board. Pinterest will pay Getty for all of the data they include alongside photos. Pinterest would not disclose the financial terms of the deal.

'One thing we've found is that the more we know about a pin, the more valuable we can make it for you,' wrote Michael Yamartino, a product manager at Pinterest, on the company's blog. 'That's why we've been working with partners to get more data into Pinterest to help us make recommendations, make pins more useful, and even offer notifications when prices drop.'

Pinterest's recent moves have all focused on creating more written content. In September, Pinterest rolled out promoted pins to allow advertisers the opportunity to get more detailed content in front of possible customers alongside images.

Later that month, Pinterest expanded article pins to include more detail about the publication, author and article title, adding more detail once again to the images users share.

Friday's deal was closed recently - so the Getty data should start to accompany pictures in the 'coming months,' according to a Pinterest spokesperson.
