Spotify overhauls web, desktop and iOS apps with new look, new features

Spotify has begun updating its desktop, web and iOS apps with an overhauled interface, dark theme and new Your Music mode, which helps you save tracks or albums for playback at a later date.

It's the first major interface change for the music streaming service in several years, which flies in the face of the colourful, vibrant icons chosen by Apple for iOS 7. Beyond dark backgrounds, the icons and fonts have been tweaked with plenty of circles and rounded corners.

The new Your Music feature adds a new entry to the menu bar for dragging and dropping albums or tracks into when you don't want to put them in a specific playlist. Spotify takes these tracks and automatically sorts them using its algorithms to make it easier to find specific genres, artists or albums when you come back to listen later.

Browse has also been overhauled to deliver 'more relevant and localised content', providing different suggestions or curated playlists depending on the time of day, or day of the week. If you're looking for the ideal monday morning commute music, Spotify should now suggest tracks to suit your mood.

The new look begins rolling out today, the 2nd of April, and will soon be available to all Spotify users - whether they pay the £9.99 monthly subscription for an ad-free service, listen through the desktop or web apps without paying, or use the free Spotify Shuffle service on their Apple tablet or smartphone. There's currently no word on an update for Google's Android devices.
