Google reportedly working on new standalone mobile chat app


Google is in the process of developing a new mobile messaging app that will likely be tested in several emerging markets, according to a report from The Economic Times. Not to be confused with Hangouts, this new platform will be a standalone service and will not require a Google account.


The app is expected to launch next year and will feature localized language support for different regions and voice-to-text messaging capabilities. With chat-focused software like WhatsApp having so much success and Hangouts evolving into a broader communication platform, Google's new messenger app could be used to reach a more casual audience.


A few month's back, the search giant discontinued its SMS-powered messenger that was available in regions with limited internet access. It's possible that this new application could be paired with Google's new Android One program to offer a more viable messaging option to people in emerging markets.
