A Rare Look Inside Apple's Maiden, North Carolina Data Center [Video]
Apple granted NBC a brief look inside its Maiden, North Carolina data center for a news segment entitled, 'A New Kind of Apple Farm'.Apple is moving to shrink its carbon footprint, building the nation's largest privately owned solar farm to run its data center, NBC chief environmental correspondent Anne Thompson reports. The Maiden facility has earned the LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council - the first data center of its size to be honored. On any given day, between 60 and 100 percent of the renewable energy it uses is generated onsite through biogas fuel cells and two 20‑megawatt solar arrays - the nation's largest privately owned renewable energy installation - and Apple purchases any remaining power they need from entirely clean sources. The Maiden data center generates 167 million kilowatt‑hours of renewable energy onsite per year - enough to power the equivalent of 13,837 homes.Take a look at the video below for more details or click here to watch a recent video produced by Apple touting some of its efforts to reduce the company's impact on the environment.Read More [via Adam][Flash]
