(RED) Mac Pro Sells for $977000 at Sotheby's Auction

The custom Product(RED) Mac Pro designed by Jonathan Ive and Marc Newson for a special Sotheby's charity auction brought in US$977,000, which was well above the estimated $60,000 it was expected to bring in. The proceeds from the sale will go to support AIDS efforts.

Product(RED) Mac Pro sells for nearly a million dollars

Apple hasn't shipped the redesigned Mac Pro yet, so the special (RED) edition is a one of a kind in more than one way: Not only is it the only red colored Mac Pro, it's the only Mac Pro that's ever been sold. The new model is expected to be available at its $2,999 price point before the end of the year.

Despite the amazingly high selling price for the Mac Pro, other items the two men designed for the auction sold at even higher prices. A custom designed desk sold for $1.68 million, and a Leica Digital Rangefinder Camera sold for $1.8 million.

The prices seem out of this world, but the money they helped raise is going to an important cause. There's also a lucky -- and very wealthy -- person out there that now owns a one of a kind red Mac Pro.
