2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Manual EPA
After waiting forever for horsepower numbers, and then performance estimates, Chevrolet has released the official EPA estimates for the 2014 Corvette Stingray. When equipped with its new seven-speed manual gearbox, the 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray nets 17/29 mpg city/highway, which Chevy says is an 11-percent increase in fuel economy over the outgoing C6 Corvette.
The new 2014 Corvette's LT1 455-hp 6.2-liter V-8 may be more powerful than the 430-hp LS3 V-8 in the outgoing Corvette, but thanks to tricks like direct injection, variable valve timing, and Active Fuel Management (which can shut down up to four cylinders while cruising on the highway) its 17/29 mpg rating beats the outgoing car's 16/26 mpg rating.
Chevrolet says the Corvette Stingray's 29 mpg highway rating is an average of fuel economy from the default 'Tour' mode, and the driver-selectable 'Eco' mode. In Tour, Corvette Stingray owners should expect 28 mpg on the highway, while engaging Eco mode enables Active Fuel Management, allowing the Corvette to achieve 30 mpg on the highway.
For comparison, a 2014 Porsche 911 Carrera with a seven-speed manual and a naturally aspirated 3.4-liter or 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine are both EPA-rated at 19/27 mpg. Priced well under the 2014 Corvette Stingray's $50,000+ base price are the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS and 2014 Ford Mustang GT, which are EPA-rated at 16/24 and 15/26 mpg, respectively, with a V-8 and a six-speed manual.
Fuel economy figures for the 2014 Corvette Stingray with the available six-speed automatic transmission aren't available yet, but we're expecting it beat the 15/25 mpg offered by the outgoing Corvette with the six-speed slushbox.
