Intel teams with Luxottica for 'desirable' smart eyewear

Summary: The companies will work together on research and development to create smart, fashion-forward eyewear that consumers just might actually want to wear.

Intel is continuing its push for wearables domination, announcing Wednesday that it has entered into a multi-year collaboration deal with eyewear maker Luxottica.

Earlier this week it was reported that Intel would replace Texas Instruments as the chipmaker of choice for the next wave of Google Glass.

As for the Luxottica deal, the companies said they plan to work together on research and development to create smart, fashion-forward eyewear ranging from luxury to sport, that consumers actually want to wear.

Luxottica can certainly lend some expertise in the desirable eyewear department. The Italian company has a lock on the eyewear and sunglass market, with house brands including Ray-Ban and Oakley. The company also manufactures for licensed luxury brands such as Chanel, Dolce & Gabana, Prada, Burberry and Georgio Armani, just to name a few.

Both the Google and Luxottica partnerships reinforce a promise Intel CEO Brian Krzanich made to shareholders in November, vowing that the company would have a presence in the wearables space through strategic, chip-powered partnerships.

'The growth of wearable technology is creating a new playing field for innovation,' Krzanich said in a statement. 'Through our collaboration with Luxottica Group, we will unite our respective ecosystems and bring together Intel's leading-edge silicon and software technology with Luxottica's design innovation and consumer expertise. We expect the combination of our expertise to help drive a much faster pace of innovation and push the envelope of what's possible.'

Intel expects the first glasses from the collaboration to roll out in 2015.
