The Witcher 3 Will Offer 16 Pieces Of Free DLC

When The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt releases in February of next year, heroic adventurers won't have to track down additional content in the months that follow. Developer CD Project Red has announced 16 pieces of DLC are currently planned for the open world RPG and, here's the kicker, all of it will be 100 percent free.

Yeah, I know, free DLC is about as rare as a Sasquatch sighting these days, but it looks like that's exactly what CD Project Red will be dishing out throughout 2015. In an open letter from Joint CEO Marcin Iwinski, it's explained that the decision to offer so much free additional content stems from little more than the studio's love of games.

'Every time we reach out for a new release, we expect to be taken care of,' he said. 'We expect support if we encounter any problems, we love updates constantly improving the experience, and we feel really special when we receive free content that gives us more than we initially paid for.'

Iwinski goes on to admit that this type of gratis content isn't exactly a popular fad in an age where you can pre-order $30 DLC season passes before a game has even launched.

'Cutting to the chase, everyone who buys Wild Hunt will receive 16 specially prepared DLCs absolutely for free, regardless of platform,' he continues. 'You don't have to pre-order, you don't have to buy any special edition to get them—if you own a copy of Wild Hunt, they're yours. It's our way of saying thank you for buying our game.'

Iwinski highlighted several potential ideas for what the DLC may include, such as a new character skin, sword or armor. The full details of the DLC won't be revealed until following the Witcher 3 launch, though we do have some details on what players can expect from the first batch of goodies on Feb. 25. On that day, you'll be able to enjoy the Temerian Armor set, which includes matching duds for your mount, as well as a beard and hairstyle set for further customization of Geralt, the game's protagonist. The current plan is to release another pair of freebies every week for eight straight weeks, hitting that target number of 16 total.

According to a statement from CD Project Red, this DLC won't be free only to early adopters, either. No matter when you buy The Witcher 3, this content will be available at no additional charge.

As one final teaser for what the DLC has in store, the press release goes on to highlight the second week's worth of goods, including an additional quest for players to explore, as well as a new skin for one of the main characters, Yennefer of Vengerberg.
