Google updates Maps for Android and iOS with more shine and Uber bookings

BUSY COMPANY Google is pushing out a significant update for its Maps application on Android and iOS, promising a shiny new look and additional features.

Google Maps is your most immediate option if you're in an unusual location wondering how to find the nearest burger trough or trying to determine your Arsenal from your Eltham.

Google says that its pocket Maps option will be updated over the next couple of days and will emerge like some sort of colourful, photo- and information-stuffed butterfly that can recommend restaurants and taxi options.

'This new look is all about creating surfaces and shadows that echo the real world; with Google Maps' new Material feel, layers and buttons come to life so you know just where to touch to get directions, recommendations and imagery,' said the firm in a blog post.

'By tapping on a place's info sheet at the bottom of your screen, you'll send an info layer gliding up to the top showing you photos, reviews, and more.

'And for the adventurous souls looking for a new place to dine or visit, you'll see 'More to explore' at the bottom of your map.'

This brave new world of exploration brings other features such as the ability to book a table at a restaurant (via Top Table and currently only in the US), or find out how long it might take an Uber car to turn up and drop you off at a chosen location.

The fresh app version is coming out in the next few days. You might be advised to stay at home until it comes out, but you should not take that advice particularly seriously. ยต
