Tesla's Self Driving Car Soon as Musk Hints by Tweeting About 'D'

The battery-electric technology leader, Tesla Motors Inc., based in Palo Alto, California, has revealed its first stride towards automated driving as a response to an increasing competition from its rival like Volkswagen AG's Audi and Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz.

The comments made by CEO Elon Musk on Twitter hinting the announcement of the big launch next week has made the company gain much speculation and a raise of almost 4 percent in its shares.

Musk tweet late Wednesday which was retweeted more than 9,000 times and favorited more than 6,500 times reads: 'About time to unveil the D and something else,' along with a teaser image of front of a car concealed in a garage with a letter 'D' having timestamp of Oct 9.

Later Musk mentioned: I love the Internet. Comments had me literally ROFL. No, it wasn't intentional. Glad I didn't mention the other letter! - Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 2, 2014

Though the 'letter D' and 'something else' is still vague but according to a unidentified person aware of the carmaker's plans, Tesla may reveal a set of new high-tech features including the automated lane technology which is the next generation of technology likely to be introduced in cars by the automakers.

In a statement in June, Musk announced the plans of Tesla adding self-driving, or 'auto-pilot' features, to its electric cars. He noted, 'you'll be able to go from highway on-ramp to highway exit without touching any controls,' till the end of this year.

The car might be using an amalgamation of different sensors, cameras with image recognition and radar, making the vehicle 90 percent capable of autopilot.

Although Tesla Motors Inc stock has not reached the highest till now but the 'D' official launch might help the company back in the market, after the fall in the stock of 20% in under a month.

Tesla is the chief manufacturer of the Model S sedan, price starting from $70,000. Apart from the Model S, Tesla has announced the Model X sport-utility vehicle hitting the market in 2015 and the Model 3 which is a smaller and economical version of the premium sedan, by 2017. The processors for current versions of the Model S, has been supplied by Chipmaker Nvidia Corp. (NVDA).

Simon Sproule, a company spokesman, said in an interview yesterday,'We started installing camera hardware from September in support of European' safety regulations.

'More news to come,' Sproule said.
