Microsoft hammers final nail in Nokia's coffin as rebranding is confirmed

MICROSOFT IS GEARING UP to stick the final nail in Nokia's coffin with plans to ditch the iconic brand in the 'coming weeks'.

The news was first revealed by The Verge, which heard from Microsoft that it will cull the Nokia brand in favour of 'Microsoft Lumia' within the next few weeks.

This means that the recently released Nokia Lumia 735 and Lumia 830 are likely to be the last to carry the Finnish firm's brand.

The Verge's report claimed that Nokia France will be the first to see the change across its social media channels, which has since been confirmed in a Facebook post from the company.

'In the coming days, you will receive a Facebook message regarding the change of name of this page,' Nokia France said. ' We are on the verge of becoming Microsoft Lumia! Stay tuned for more soon.'

This move shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, as a number of Nokia websites are already redirecting to Microsoft alternatives, and some of the firm's apps, such as Treasure Tag and App Social, have already ditched the Nokia brand.

What isn't yet clear is what branding will appear on future Windows Phone devices from Microsoft, and the firm has yet to comment.

It's unlikely that devices will come with 'Windows Phone' emblazoned on them, however, as Microsoft has referred to the operating system simply as 'Windows' since the launch of Windows 10, which sees the mobile software merge with its desktop offering. ยต
