Why you should be excited about the Apple Watch

We were hoping for an iWatch and Apple didn't disappoint: yesterday it showed off the Apple Watch, which might just be one watch to rule them all.

Making a smartwatch isn't easy. The good ones tend to be fairly limited - hello, Pebble!

And the ones that can do a lot tend to be pretty ugly. Mentioning (SAMSUNG). No (SAMSUNG). Names (SAMSUNG).

The biggest problem of all though is that in watches, one size doesn't fit all.

There are lots of reasons for that. As we're sure you've noticed, there are differences between men and women - and with watches, that means what looks right on a big man arm looks enormous on a more slender wrist.

There are differences in what we'll put up with - some people don't like metal on their skin, others abhor plastic - and more than anything, there are huge differences in what we like. I like dark metal diving watches. You may prefer a salmon pink Swatch, or a G-Shock.

Rather than design one watch that it hopes everybody will like, Apple has taken a different approach: it's designed ALL THE WATCHES.

There are two sizes to suit bigger and smaller hands, and there are stacks of different colour and case options to satisfy all but the most demanding watch wearers.

It won't have the rich ditching their Rolexes, but for the rest of us the customisation options - both physical and digital in the form of faces and colour schemes - mean we can have a single watch to suit every mood or outfit.

Want a sports watch, or a pedometer? The Apple Watch can be that.

An old-time analogue one, or a retro digital? That too.

There may be millions of possible combinations, ensuring that no two Apple watches need to be alike.

It's not perfect. It's quite expensive compared to Android Wear watches. It appears to be iPhone-only. The lack of mention of battery life suggests Apple hasn't got the hang of that bit yet.

And releasing details so early means the competition have time to copy it before the real thing ships.

But to this watch fan, the Apple Watch looks like a winner.
