Destiny's “Buy One, Get One Free” Deal

Bungie offers a 'buy one, get one free' deal for their game, Destiny.

The parameters of the deal are as follows: if you buy a digital copy of Destiny for either Xbox 360 or Playstation 3, you will receive access to a free digital copy of the same game for Xbox One or Playstation 4 as well.

Sounds too good to be true? Fear not for this is the real deal. But there are two details for consumers to keep in mind.

One, the offer is only valid if the digital copy is purchased the week of Destiny's initial release. The subsequent redemption of the second digital copy must then be made by January 15, 2015.

Secondly, Bungie will only allow the extra copy of Destiny to be of the same 'console family' as the one purchased. Therefore, buying a Xbox 360 version will only allow for a Xbox One upgrade. The same goes for the PS3 solely jumping to the PS4.

As not all gamers have yet obtained a 'next generation' console, this deal is quite enticing. Additionally, all game progression will be transitioned.

So why is Destiny offering such a bargain to consumers?

The deal is built on the premise that not all gamers own a next-gen console yet and some may have been planning to wait for the improved system to purchase their copy of Destiny. Rather than miss out on this portion of the market upon game release, Bungie is allowing for a future 'upgraded' copy. The timeframe of the deal is not arbitrary either. First week sales very much play into the popularity of a new title's release and the most common time of year for gamers to adopt a new console is during the holidays.

That being said, we can breathe a collective sigh of relief. There are no catches or fine print, only smart marketing by Bungie.
