Apple's iPhone Gains US Share Even Before iPhone 6 Launch

Source: comScore MobiLens

comScore reported is survey results for US smartphone market shares and it shows that even though Apple 's iPhone 5c and 5s are almost a year old that the company gained market share for the third consecutive month and in four of the past five months. From a year ago when Apple had 40.4% of US smartphone share based on a three month average it increased to 41.4% in April and 42.4% in July.

Over the past year Google 's Android platform has seen its share decline slightly from 51.8% to 51.5% in July while Microsoft 's has increased slightly from 3.0% to 3.6% (sneer at any comments that Microsoft has grown its share by 20%) and Blackberry's share has dropped from 4.3% to 2.3%. Amazon's Fire Phone launched in late July so it probably won't show up in comScore's results until at least October's data and even then if it doesn't catch on it may be part of the other category.

Will Nardella be as patient?

It will be interesting to see what Microsoft's CEO Nardella does with Windows Phone software and Nokia since he is having to invest billions of dollars with little to show for it. Gates and Ballmer were willing to take a multi-year if not decades view to making investments with Bing and xBox being examples.

I have developed a Google Doc with market share data going back to October 2011 available via this link.

To get a feeling on how Apple's stock may react to the various product and feature announcements next week this is a link to a post I wrote describing over a dozen potential items that Apple may launch.

I have also summarized various sell-side analysts thoughts on the iPhone 6 launch including Katy Huberty from Morgan Stanley, Gene Munster from Piper Jaffray, Keith Bachman from BMO, Andy Hargreaves from Pacific Crest, Stuart Jeffrey from Nomura and Andrew Uerkwitz from Oppenheimer.

comScore estimates that 71.8% of US mobile users have a smartphone and one interesting number from their data is that the number of smartphone owners was flat at 173 million month to month. While it isn't too surprising since at some point in time with smartphones dominating the market that this will occur it will be interesting to see what the next few months data shows.

Samsung gaining share in the US but losing share worldwide

comScore's data has Samsung gaining share in the US vs. losing share on a worldwide basis, especially in China. The company has increased its US share from 24.1% a year ago to 28.4% this July.

Samsung has closed the gap to Apple in the US, but it is still large, as Apple's lead was 16.3 points of share a year ago and it is now 14.0 points. When you combine the two companies share they have increased their dominance from 64.5% of the US market a year ago to 70.8% in July.
