Uber Starts a Drug Store Delivery Service in DC

Uber started a new delivery service in D.C. on Tuesday that will deliver basically anything you might find in a CVS or Walgreens right to you called Corner Store. That includes all kinds of over the counter medicine, grooming products and even diapers and condoms. It's an experiment set to run for a few weeks exclusively in D.C., but presumably if it goes well other cities will start getting their own corner store setups as well.

'No need to race to the store after a long day at the office - now you can request allergy medicine, diapers, toothpaste and over 100 other items through the Uber app,' Uber posted in a blog post. 'This limited-time-only experiment will run for a few weeks - but the more you love it, the more likely it will last.'

It's a pretty straightforward system. You tap the Corner Store button, set the delivery location and you'll get a text message from Uber of the available options. You indicate what you want to order and the driver will call you to confirm shortly before the delivery. It's not a 24-hour thing though, the service runs 9 a.m. to 9 a.m. on weekdays, but it's certainly a good option for people stuck at home or just feeling super lazy. And for now at least, it's a very cheap. The cost of the item is listed and there's no delivery cost or tip, it's all taken from your regular Uber account. That might change if the experiment succeeds well enough to become a regular service, so take advantage while you can.

Uber is testing all kinds of experiments all over the country this summer. UberMovers had a test run in two cities over the weekend and the company started testing out a shared ride carpool system called UberPool just a couple of weeks ago. How much a simple delivery service will mess with the current delivery apps, or Amazon's same-day delivery service that just arrived in D.C. will be hard to judge when the menu of items is so small, but this may just be the early rumblings of an avalanche of change coming courtesy of Uber.

Not everyone will see the Corner Store option in the Uber app, but if you don't you can sign up on Uber's website to try it out. Check to see if you live where Uber's Corner Store delivers in the map below.
