Microsoft Windows Intune Receives Android and iOS Support

Microsoft has revealed that its upcoming Windows Intune update will include support for managing mobile devices.


The Redmond-based software giant's Windows Intune service is its PC management software for enterprises that opted to use Windows desktop PCs, and it will bring mobile device management support for iOS and Android devices. The latest Windows Intune update will offer support for Windows 7 desktop management, but its selling point revolves around support for mobile devices that run on versions starting from Android 2.1 and iOS 4.0 to the latest of both.


Microsoft said that Windows Intune delivers 'people-centric management capabilities', which means better support for devices that don't run on Windows but increasingly considered by users as favorites. The company also bragged about its ability to operate a 'self-service portal' for enterprises to allow lighter device provisioning.


The Android and iOS support initiative is vital for Microsoft in order to convince enterprises in using its Windows Intune software. Companies nowadays also want to manage devices owned by employees to meet a wider range of devices, particularly those that do not use Windows-based devices. Windows, however, still dominates the desktop environment so companies opt to use a single software provider or license whenever possible.


Microsoft said Windows Intune will offer support for Windows 8 after its release before the year-end.
