McLaren P1 GTR Design Concept revealed

McLaren has revealed the first images and details of its P1 GTR Design Concept, which previews next year's hardcore, track-only P1 GTR.

McLaren says the new model will aim to be 'the best driver's car in the world on track'. So the Design Concept gets an aggressive body kit that makes it even more aerodynamically efficient than the standard P1. There's a jutting front splitter, enormous air ducts, a cavernous rear diffuser, and a tall, wide rear spoiler which, unlike the road car, will be fixed in place.

But the Design Concept's changes don't just run to the new aerodynamic upgrades. As if the standard P1's 904bhp hybrid petrol-electric powertrain wasn't quite enough, the Design Concept features an 82bhp power boost to 986bhp.

And as the Design Concept isn't road-legal, McLaren says it's been free to fit equipment more usually found on its Formula One cars, such as slick tyres, a DRS-style opening rear wing, and an ERS-style push-to-pass system.

The Design Concept also features race-spec suspension with an 80mm wider front track, an on-board air-powered jacking system, and motorsport alloy wheels with quick-release centre-locking nuts.

McLaren is aiming to start P1 GTR production within a year

How much of this will eventually make it on to the finished GTR remains unknown, but it seems likely that the concept is a very big hint at the car's final specification.

McLaren has also announced that it's to start its own driver training programme alongside the new car, to ensure buyers can get the best out of their new toys.

Release dates for the finished car are unconfirmed, but McLaren says it's aiming to start production in just under a year.
