Facebook takes security startup PrivateCore into its fold

Facebook on Thursday announced that it is acquiring security startup, PrivateCore, specialized in server data protection.

Founded in 2012 by former Google and VMware (VMW) security experts, the Palo Alto, Calif., based company develops security software that protects servers against malware threats, malicious hardware devices as well as unauthorized physical access. The company's vCage technology helps in validating and protecting server data.

Announcing the acquisition, Facebook's Chief Security Officer, Joe Sullivan, in a statement said that PrivateCore's technology and expertise will aid in supporting the company's mission to help make the world more open and connected, in a secure and trusted way.

As a part of the deal, in addition to PrivateCore's technology some of the company's core team members including co-founders Oded Horovitz and Steve Weis will also be moving to Facebook's Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters along with other team members.

PrivateCore CEO Oded Horovitz in a blog post said the acquisition to be quite exciting as both the companies share an aligned mission. Same like Facebook, which has done more than any company to connect the world, PrivateCore also aims to use its secure server technology to help make the world's connections more secure, he said.

Horovitz added that the acquisition brings a huge opportunity for both the companies to pursue their joint vision at scale with incredible impact.

He also said that Facebook is planning to deploy the security firm's technology into the company's server stack in due course of time to help protect its users.

Financial terms of the deal are yet to be disclosed.
