AMD to sell three Radeon R7 Series SSDs

In a Tuesday announcement, AMD revealed that it plans to sell three high-performance Radeon R7 Series SSDs which will be manufactured by OCZ. The 2.5-inch SSDs will be part of AMD's Radeon line of GPUs.

According to the details shared by AMD, the new Radeon R7 Series SSDs will be available in three capacities --- 120GB, 240GB, and 480GB, which will respectively cost $100, $164, and $299. All the three SSDs will come with a 4 -year warranty.

With the Radeon R7 Series SSDs to boast sequential speeds of 545MB/sec and write speeds of 530 MB/sec, the new drives will essentially enable AMD to offer high-speed storage together with microprocessors and graphics chips.

To be positioned in-between the OCZ Vector 150 Series SSD and the OCZ Vertex 460 mainstream drive, the Radeon R7 Series SSDs will use the Barefoot 3 M00 controller, which will support 256-bit AES encryption, as well as Toshiba's A19 NAND flash. The new drives will consume barely 2.7 watts apiece under load, or 0.6 watts while idling.

Drawing attention to the fact that 'the AMD Radeon brand is synonymous with performance and quality amongst PC gamers,' Roman Kyrychynskyi - AMD's director of memory - said: 'With the new AMD Radeon R7 Series SSDs powered by outstanding OCZ Storage Solutions IP, we bring that reputation to the SSD market with a series of drives that offer an ideal combination of performance, reliability and affordability-great for gamers building or upgrading a rig.'
