Windows 9 speculation rampant

The much-anticipated follow up to Windows 8, dubbed Windows 9, is being readied for a release date in Q2 or Q3, 2015 according to fresh reports.

Renowned Russian tech industry leaker group WZOR, who has been often correct in the past, made a post saying Windows 9 will come as a free update for those who installed Windows 8.1 or Windows 8 Update 2.

The Russian group 'confirmed' that Windows 8.1 Update 2 should be released in August or September this year, but said users who install Windows 8.1 Update 2 from scratch will need new license keys.

WZOR also said that Microsoft will likely offer two options to users who are still on Windows 8.0, that they could either update to Windows 8.1 Update 1 and then to Windows 8.1 Update 2, or for likely a small fee, purchase a direct update to Windows 8.1 Update 2 from the Windows Store.

The updated OS is said to come with OneDrive, Cortana, Metro UI changes, enhanced Windows activation as well as Windows Defender for system protection.

Meanwhile various media reports have speculated that Windows 9, which is codenamed Threshold, will largely ditch the Metro touch interface and instead focus on desktop and laptop users who use a mouse and keyboard.

The release would be the first major Windows OS since new Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella took over back in February.

With the Windows 8.1 update, Microsoft focused on creating profiles based on the specs of each device that it is being used on - some devices running the operating system have Power and Search buttons on the Metro start screen for example, while others don't.

Online sources say Microsoft is going to continue in this fashion with Windows 9, customising the interface so that the desktop interface will load as the default for PC and laptop users, whole evices like the Surface Pro will be able to switch back and forth between the desktop and Metro user interfaces, depending on if there are any keyboards connected to the device.

Meanwhile some have suggested that Microsoft might create a setting for Windows 9 users to be able to turn the Metro live tile interface completely off.

The next Windows 8 update is expected to be released amy day now, ahead of a big official August Patch Tuesday launch of 12 August.
