That UK Cinema Ban? It Even Applies to Prescription Google Glass Wearers

We didn't bother reporting on that UK cinema ban on Google Glass that made headlines a week or two ago because ... well ... of course Glass isn't allowed in movie theaters. You also can't use cellphones, smartphones and other technology while people are trying to watch a movie, nor can you use other devices with recording capabilities. It didn't register on our 'this is news' scale.

But now more information has come to light about it - namely that the UK theater industry is willing to turn away customers that wear prescription glasses if those glasses happen to have Google Glass attached.

The UK-based website Mobile Choice confirmed that the ban extends to prescription Glass owners, according to Phil Clapp of the UK Cinema Exhibitor's Association:

'If a customer turns up wearing Google Glass with prescription lenses and has no ordinary pair of glasses with them, then it is likely they will be refused entry,' Clapp said.

The chief executive added: 'If any customer is found using wearable technology in the auditorium, then they are likely to be asked to leave. If they are suspected of recording images, then the police will be called.'

The association is concerned about copyright infringement via the video camera on Glass and Clapp says the group is aware that Glass has limited recording capabilities at the moment.

Here in the US, the Motion Picture Association of America said earlier this year that Glass is not a threat to content theft in movie theaters.

Alamo Drafthouse, a small chain of theaters in Texas, has said that Glass won't be allowed in auditoriums once the lights dim.
