SEOUL, July 10 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. said Thursday it has commenced the sales of the Galaxy Tab S at home, the lightest and thinnest of its Galaxy tablet PC lineup.

Samsung Electronics said the 10.5-inch version of the 6.6 mm-thin device will weigh only 465 grams, lighter than any of its tablet PCs released earlier in similar sizes. The 8.4-inch edition weighs 294 grams. They will both work under Wi-Fi networks.

The tablets will be powered by Google Inc.'s Android 4.4, or KitKat, and are equipped with 8-megapixel and 2.1-megapixel cameras on the back and front, respectively. The 8.4-inch edition will hold a 4,900 mAh capacity battery and will come in two colors -- bronze and white. The 10.5-inch version will hold a 7,900 mAh battery.

Samsung's magazine service, Papergarden, will also be included in the Galaxy Tab S for the first time. The digital interactive service makes available a wide range of popular magazines in vivid and true-to-life colors.

Samsung said additional features include a 'Multi User Mode' that enables users to create their own personal optimized profile and a built-in 'Fingerprint Scanner' for safe and convenient access.

The local price tag on the smaller version of the Galaxy Tab S is set at 599,000 won (US$592.6), while the larger edition will cost 699,000 won.

The device will be available for sales in 20 countries, including the United States and Britain. Samsung said the devices will continue to tap other markets as well.
