'Encouragement': The new iPhone could be the digital equivalent of your ripped friend who guilt trips you all the time

The new iPhone operating system could have the ability to nag you to get off the sofa and go to the gym.

The forthcoming iOS 8 operating system will keep a track of how much you're exercising, and will have the ability to give you a gentle reminder if you're being lazy.

But it'll also be smart enough to leave you alone when you're at the gym, according to a new patent granted to the tech giant.

The new HealthKit system, integrated in the new software update and thought to tie in with a rumoured Apple smart watch, is smart enough to work out when you're working out, and will automatically enter 'do not disturb' mode.

This would not only let you give complete focus to burning calories, but also see an end to those flaunting basic gym etiquette because they can't keep off their phones.

Apple successfully applied for a patent to create a modular smartwatch, combining GPS and motion sensors in the body and strap.

And the system's smart enough to tell the difference between pounding the treadmill and a brief sprint for the bus - which doesn't count as a workout no matter how much you want it to.

It's thought this device, when officially announced, will become the centrepiece of the new iPhone software's health tracking system, allowing users to monitor their progress.

The company say the HealthKit system can even connect to local medical services so doctors can let you know if anything in your stats doesn't look quite right.

Insiders expect the iPhone 6 to be announced in late September, after manufacturers embark on an unprecedented production run this month.

It'll come in two sizes, with a 5.5 inch screen and a 4.7 inch screen, though it's thought the models will have staggered releases to avoid competition between the two models.
