Why Netflix's Deal With Comcast Is A Good Thing

Netflix deal with Comcast is backed with impressive statistics to prove how beneficialy the partnership has turned out for end users.


Netflix, one of the most popular video streaming services, released its monthly statistics for March that shows a significant boost in the overall performance of the service. The Netflix ISP Speed Index data shows which internet service providers offer the best Netflix streaming experience during primetime. In the U.S., Netflix's deal with Comcast resulted in a 65 percent increase in the average streaming speed, from 1.5Mbps in January to 2.5Mbps in March.


The deal was signed in February, where the video streaming service pays Comcast to use the carrier's content-delivery network (CDN) instead of third party networks and Open Connect, Netflix's CDN initiative. Major carriers around the world including Frontier, British Telecom, TDC, Clearwire, GVT, Telus, Virgin, Google Fiber and others connect their networks to Netflix's Open Connect to deliver content to their subscribers.


'We are dedicated to delivering a great streaming experience and invest in continually improving that experience,' Netflix said in its official blog, Monday. 'Part of that investment is working with ISPs to make Netflix delivery easy and to avoid congestion. We see consistently better speeds for customers served by ISPs that directly connect their network to Netflix using our Open Connect content delivery network.'


Netflix also noted in its blog that the ISP Speed Index initiative also covers more countries in Latin America including Costa Rica, Ecuador, Jamaica, Panama, Peru and Uruguay, where ISPs provide best video streaming service through Netflix.


Netflix also shows country-to-country comparisons, which place Uruguay in South America on top of the list and Costa Rica last in the 11 nations ranking. The collaboration between major cable and internet streaming companies is a major leap toward better service and expanding its portfolio with other major cable companies will improve Netflix's reach in the highly competitive market.
