'Borderlands: The Pre

Do you love Gearbox's Software's smash hit series? The odds say you do, as Borderlands 2 is publisher 2K's best-selling game of all time. Well, you're getting more Borderlands.

The only catch is that it's not being developed exclusively by Gearbox this time. While the Plano-based game developer is busy on other things (they say they're working on new IPs, rather than sequels to their existing franchises), developer 2K Australia will be doing the heavy lifting on this game set between Borderlands 1 and 2. A Borderlands 1.5, if you will.

According to Gearbox's announcement, 'you'll play as four all-new character classes fighting alongside Handsome Jack, witnessing his transformation into the ruthless tyrant you loved to hate in Borderlands 2, and assisting with the rise of the Hyperion Corporation ... The four new playable character classes are all familiar faces from the Borderlands universe: Athena the Gladiator (The Secret Armory of General Knoxx), Wilhelm the Enforcer (the robotic badass of Borderlands 2), Nisha the Lawbringer (The Sheriff of Lynchwood in Borderlands 2), and yes, even Claptrap the Prototype (from just about everywhere... unfortunately).'

Yeah, you read that right. Series psuedo-mascot Claptrap is a playable character this time around. This is sure to either delight or annoy you, so prepare accordingly.

While 2K Australia seems to be leading the charge on development, Gearbox is definitely involved. At the very least, Borderlands 2 lead writer Anthony Burch is on the writing team for The Pre-Sequel.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel will be hitting the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC later this year. Sorry, fans of the PS4 and Xbox One. According to Polygon, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford says all of the investment for this game is going toward content, rather than technology (updating engines and assets for the new consoles would mean more work), and Borderlands fans already have the older systems.

If you're going to PAX East this week in Boston, you can get your hands on The Pre-Sequel there. Otherwise, you might be waiting until later this year to shoot and loot again.
