Dropbox grows leadership team with Condoleezza Rice
At first glance, it seems like an unusual choice. But the cloud storage service is trying to grow its international presence, which is something a former US Secretary of State should know how to do.
Instead of a tech guru for a new board member, Dropbox has expanded its horizons. The cloud storage company announced Wednesday that Condoleezza Rice is the newest member of its board of directors.
Yes, that Condoleezza -- the one who served as US Secretary of State under President George W. Bush.
While Condi isn't the most natural-seeming fit as a tech company board member, she's had a long stint teaching at Silicon Valley's Stanford University and has ample experience conducting business with various world leaders and foreign companies.
It appears it's that international know-how that Dropbox was after in its board member search. In the increasingly competitive cloud storage market, Dropbox has been vying to boost its international presence -- so, it makes sense it'd turn to someone like Rice.
'When looking to grow our board, we sought out a leader who could help us expand our global footprint,' Dropbox CEO Drew Houston wrote in a blog post. 'Dr. Rice has had an illustrious career as Provost of Stanford University, board member of companies like Hewlett Packard and Charles Schwab, and former United States Secretary of State. We're honored to be adding someone as brilliant and accomplished as Dr. Rice to our team.'
In addition to adding Rice to its board of directors, Dropbox also announced it promoted Sujay Jaswa to be its chief financial officer and hired Motorola Mobility's CEO Dennis Woodside to be its chief operating officer. It's been rumored that Woodside was planning to leave Motorola Mobility after Google sold the company to Lenovo in January.
