Amazon streaming box unveiling expected Wednesday

Amazon's long-awaited streaming set-top box is expected to finally get an unveiling Wednesday morning, at a special Amazon press event in New York hosted by executive Peter Larsen. The media was invited to 'an update on our video business,' which will begin at 11 a.m. Eastern time.

We don't know what the gadget is called, what it will look like, what it will cost or where it will be sold. Rumors have indicated everything from a Google Chromecast-style dongle form factor to the inclusion of gaming functionality.

Whatever form it ends up taking, the Amazon product will compete with Apple's Apple TV, Google's Chromecast, Roku's family of players and numerous other such products already on the market.

The product, which will reportedly run on a 'forked' version of Android, is also expected to easily interface with Amazon's existing Video on Demand offerings, much the way the Kindle and Kindle Fire products work currently.

The Wall Street Journal reported last month that Amazon was preparing a free, ad-supported streaming service to go along with the set-top box, but Amazon quickly denied the report.
