Amazon's Smartphone Leaked

Amazon has long been rumored to be in development of an Amazon-branded smartphone with the Wall Street Journal reporting that the company plans to announce the aforementioned smartphone this June for a third quarter 2014 release. But today the folks at BGR, who have previously leaked details on Amazon's other products including the recently announced Amazon Fire TV, have unveiled both images of and details on Amazon's upcoming flagship smartphone.


According to the report, Amazon's smartphone, which is currently unnamed, focuses on two things - Amazon products and services, and a custom 3D interface. The images leaked by BGR show Amazon's smartphone encased in a protective shell meant to hide the phone's actual physical design. Also seen in the photos are a total of 5 front-facing cameras.


BGR says the Amazon smartphone will feature 4.7-inch screen, which is smaller than competing brands' upcoming flagship devices. It will also feature a lower resolution screen at 720p HD compared to the 1080p HD screens of other upcoming devices. It will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor as well as 2GB of RAM.


The report states that the phone's cameras consist of a 13-megapixel rear camera and the aforementioned 5 front-facing cameras. One of the front-facing cameras will be a standard front-facing camera for video chatting and Amazon's Mayday customer service feature. The other four front-facing cameras are actually, according to the report, low-power infrared cameras.


The infrared cameras will be used to track the position of the user's face and eyes in relation to the phone's screen which will allow the phone to achieve the custom 3D interface that Amazon is said to be focusing on as a main feature of the device.


According to the report, Amazon is trying to implement its glasses-free 3D experience in as many ways as possible including special wallpapers, application icons, core UI elements, major applications including maps, and the company's own services including the Amazon book store, music store, and the Amazon digital market. The company is also trying to recruit third-party developers to make their apps utilize the phone's 3D interface with a set of API's that Amazon is set to make available.


No exact announcement or release dates for Amazon's first smartphone were revealed other than the company may be targeting an announcement in the next few months and an US-exclusive launch sometime near the end of the summer.
