The Main Types of Blog Advertising Opportunities:

Online advertising offers three primary types of ads bloggers can use to make money from their blogs.

Pay-per-click: The advertiser pays the blogger each time someone clicks on the advertiser's ad.
Pay-per-impression: The advertiser pays the blogger each time the ad appears on the blog's page.
Pay-per-action: The advertiser pays the blogger each time someone clicks on the ad and performs an action such as making a purchase.


Contextual Ads:

Contextual ads are typically pay-per-click ads. The ads are delivered based on the content of the page on the blog where the ads will be displayed. In theory, the ads shown on the page should be relevant to the content of the page thereby increasing the chance that someone will click on them. Google AdSense is an example of a contextual advertising program.Google AdSense and Kontera are examples of contextual advertising oppportunities.

Text Link Ads:

Ads that are not served based on the content of a blog's page but rather are placed based on specific text in the posts of a blog are called text link ads. Text Link Brokers and Text-Link-Ads are examples of text link advertising opportunities.

Impression-Based Ads:

Ads that pay bloggers based on the number of times the ad appears on the blog are called impression-based ads. FastClick and Tribal Fusion are examples of impression-based advertising opportunities.

Affiliate Ads:

Affiliate ads give bloggers a choice of programs to provide links to products. Bloggers are paid when someone purchases the advertised product. Amazon Associates and eBay Affiliates are examples of affiliate advertising programs.

Direct Ads:

Many bloggers offer an option for visitors to purchase advertising space on their blogs. Direct ads are typically shown in the form of banner ads or similar display ads provided directly to the blogger by the advertiser to be uploaded to the blog. Pricing and payment methods vary from blogger to blogger (often dependent on the amount of traffic the blog receives). Direct advertisers on blogs are sometimes called sponsors of that blog.

Reviews:

Reviews (often called sponsored reviews) are an indirect form of advertising on blogs. A company might contact a blogger directly asking them to write a review for a product, business, website, etc. If the blogger is paid to write the review, then it is a form of advertising revenue. Some companies offer forms of review advertising such as PayPerPost.

A Freelancer's Performance Review: Strengths and Weaknesses

Earlier in the week we began a discussion of how a freelancer can perform a performance review to help in planning for the next year. Last time we talked about your mission, what you have been doing and what you should be doing. Today, we are doing to deal with one of the classic evaluation areas of a performance review in the workplace. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Strengths

I always like to start with the positive. This is not just a "warm, fuzzy," it actually has some science behind it. Evaluations which focus primarily on things needing improvement tend to be less effective than those whose primary focus is on reinforcing those things which are being done well.

There was a study done at a workshop several years ago. The participants each received training and were evaluated in their post training performance. Those receiving only negative evaluation (evaluations of things needing improvement) showed the least improvement. Those receiving a mixture of positive and negative evaluation improved more. Those receiving only positive evaluation of those things done well during the training improved the most. So, always begin any evaluation, even a self-evaluation, with an examination of what you do well.

Areas for Growth (I prefer that to "weaknesses)


 Why do I use that term instead of weaknesses? Am I just trying to put a positive spin on things? No, although, that by itself would be sufficient reason to do so. Words do impact our attitudes and those attitudes impact our performance. However, there is another reason. Weaknesses limits your thinking to things you already do, but could do better. However, not all improvement simply comes from correcting some flaw. Some of it comes from expanding on what you already do well or broadening your area of strength into new areas.

For instance, maybe you are already proficient in using Photoshop to fix the quality of the photos you take to illustrate your articles and books. However, you might feel you want to do more like create book covers or web banners.

Of course, some things you might not be doing so well at. Maybe you need to work on dialog or describing locations. These are areas where you need to improve. It might not even be a skill area. For creatives, the business side of art is often the problem. I may be good at writing, but not at keeping my books straight. I might understand plot and character, but not marketing and advertising. So, I might need to do some work on developing those skills as well.

So, as part of your annual review make a list of strengths and weaknesses.  Next up: An action plan.

Uploading pictures in Blogger

There are two different "ways" of using pictures in Blogger:

1. pictures uploaded in Blogger Post (or gadget/widget)
2. picture used in Blogger HTML layout (for Blog design purposes)


PICTURES IN POSTS
Uploaded pictures HAVE to be stored (hosted) somewhere. When you upload a pic from your computer into Blogger Post, it will automatically be stored in your default Picasa account that comes in a package with your Blogger account....



► in Blogger, you'll click on Upload Image button, Browse for the pic on your comp (machine), and Upload it...
But if you take a better look, you'll notice the other option in Upload pop-up window:
Add an image from the web gives you the option to upload a picture hosted somewhere else on the web (using direct link), be it from your existing Album (Photobucket, Imageshack....), or the one you will create.


"Why do I have two options anyway?"

Picture storage - in default Picasa (pics uploaded from your computer), you have a storage limit of 1GB. If you exceed this, picture's will be broken. Your options are:
- upgrade Picasa account (you'll have to pay)
- combine with uploading pictures from a free picture hosting services

Picture size - if you upload the pics from your computer, not only they are stored in Picasa by default, but they are also automatically re-sized and compressed. Blogger has 3 options:
- small (width is 200px)
- medium (width is 320px)
- large (width is 400px)

They will show up in their full size when clicked on, but in the post, you can only choose from these 3 options.

Uploading images hosted on a free picture hosting services, you will have better manipulation of the picture appearance in the Blogger post, without automatic re-size or compression.


WHERE TO HOST YOUR PICTURES?
Well, probably you already have an account somewhere, but the important thing here is to get the Direct Link to our hosted pic. When we've done that, we can use this Link either:

► in Blogger Post (gadgets/widgets)
► or in HTML of the Blog template (custom design tweaking)

I'll make a list of my personal favorites when it comes to Free picture hosting. So, in this order:

Tinypic.com, owned and operated by Photobucket.com, is a fast, simple, reliable and free video and image hosting site. Personally, I love it because of it's short URL address, and unlimited bandwidth. Other features:
► the image size limit is 1600 pixels (either width or height)
► images and videos on your account will not be removed
► unlimited storage, hosting period and bandwidth!

Create an account, and start uploading. Just be careful to copy the Direct Link, and use it in your Blogger Blog Post, or HTML. Here's a few screen shots:


ImageShack.us is an intuitive and easy-to-use free media hosting service. It can be used to upload images, flash files, and videos. It's free, but you also have the upgrade option. Features:
► each image you upload must be less than 5 MB in size
► your files will be available forever (if you have an account)
► unlimited storage
► unlimited bandwidth for videos and slideshows, and allows each hotlinked image 300 megabytes of transfer per hour

Create an account (1 minute), upload pics, and get the Direct Link for your Blog. Here's how it looks like:


Photobucket.com is a famous media-sharing and hosting site where you can upload and store your images and videos. You can choose to have either a Free or Pro (paid) Photobucket account. By default, a new account is Free. Features:
► free accounts users limited to 1MB file size and max. resolution of 1024 x 768px
► up to 1 GB of space for images and video clips
► free accounts are allowed 25 GB of bandwidth per month

Unlike Facebook, Google plus has still a long way to go in terms of popularity and user profiles. Although Google has had been trying really hard to promote Google plus by affiliating it with all the other products that comes under the same brand, people often find this social network a dry one indeed. How Do I Make Money from Banners on My Blogger Blog?
Affiliate marketing banners make money for the publisher - that's you. When you place a banner on your blog the affiliate program gives you a snippet of code to add to your template which makes the banner display and identifies you as the publisher. When a visitor clicks on a banner on your website that click is recorded as originating from your site and you make money as a result of that click. Depending on the merchant program that you have signed up for you can earn a commission for providing a lead, or receive a percentage of the sale.

An Example of How Banners Work
After having placed your banner ad on your Blogger blog your site gets 100 visitors in a day. Out of that 100 people 5 people click on a banner which takes them through to the merchant's website. From those 5 people one person makes a purchase of around $100.00. Assuming your commission is 10% of the sale you have just made yourself $10.00. It's that easy.

Too many banner ads can give your visitors the impression you are just in it for the money. So make sure you don't go overboard with too much advertising that will overshadow or detract from the content of your blog. Remember less is more so place your banners ads strategically on your blog. I like a small cluster of about 4 banner ads usually 125x125 somewhere fairly close to the top in the sidebar and a 468x60 banner in the header. The header is a prime position for an effective banner advertising campaign. The other main problem with banner ads is that they encourage visitors to leave your site and as we all know one of the hardest jobs is to attract the visitor in the first place. Do you really want them leaving your site before they have had a chance to look around? I don't think so. Only place banner ads on your blog that you are confident will reap you some rewards otherwise forget it. You might actually lose traffic if you provide too many inducements to leave your site.

Google Adsense ad network is a part of Google. Digital Strategy for B2B: A Primer for 2013


People today engage with brands across multiple platforms and devices. To effectively connect with customers in 2013, companies will need to deliver a consistent, holistic message across multiple touchpoints.

With the new year around the corner, now is the time to think about your company's digital strategy for 2013.


1) Consider the Mobile Experience First, Scale up from There.


2013 will be known for many marketers as the year of the “Post-PC Era.” For the first time ever, total sales of personal computers have declined in 2012 from previous years, and sales of tablets and smartphones are reaching critical mass. Alongside that is the mainstream acceptance of mobile apps and cross-platform web services that many people have integrated into their daily lives and workflow.

In addition to the decline of personal computers, there has been a broader acceptance of  Cloud-based services that are rapidly replacing desktop PCs as being the de facto digital hub for many people, allowing them to synchronize and access media and files across a multitude of devices and platforms.

With this context, more and more people are accessing B2B web content from mobile devices, in many instances during initial contact with your organization or brand, to get a quick download. In that scenario, it is often crucial that your web presence is on-brand and sends the right message about your company.

As mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) become more prevalent, having a mobile-optimized website is critical to communicating with your audience. Roughly half of smartphone users have indicated that they're less likely to use a business that does not have a mobile-friendly website.

2) Avoid Silo Solutions

A frequent trap for many companies is the desire to reinvent the wheel for separate divisions, initiatives, platforms, or devices. At best, it is a duplication of effort; at worst, it presents a very fragmented message (or messages) to the market. Develop a strategy that allows for the reuse of existing content.

Choose a backend system that is reusable across multiple devices and platforms. With the proliferation of iOS devices, Android devices, Blackberry and Windows smartphones and tablets, and an increasing array of standards-based browsers for people to choose from, companies will need to work harder to make sure their content is viewable and accessible when and where customers demand it.

3) Build Trust

In B2C, if you bought the worst car or computer on the market, you still have a decent product with a lot of consumer protection safeguarding your purchase. However, in B2B, transactions are inherently filled with risk. Careers and sometimes much more are on the line, and as a result people tend to gravitate toward companies that have the strongest brand in a particular market segment, and ultimately branding boils down to trust. “Do I trust this company? Will the company keep its promises? Will it be around 10 or 20 years from now?”

Anything your company can do to facilitate trust will be key to your digital strategy. Customer testimonials, awards, and case studies are only a small sample of proof points that you can integrate into your content mix, and don't be shy about tooting your own horn about newsworthy accomplishments. Also engage in content marketing, where you are providing valuable and insightful information to your buyers, that will generate brand loyalty and convert prospects into customers.

This is where Social Media can play an active role in your digital strategy. Social media marketing essentially boils down to word-of-mouth communications and endorsements of your brand as well as establishing a sincere and genuine dialogue with online users. 

4) Speak to The Right People

For B2B companies engaging with customers on web and mobile, it is crucial that your messaging is specifically crafted to speak to the right person at the right level. For many companies, their communications are often targeting discreet niche audiences in various market segments.  Engineers are primarily concerned with the nuts and bolts of your products and/or services; specs, data sheets, features and benefits. Executives, on the other hand, are more concerned about ROI and proof points. Make sure that your content is speaking clearly and passionately to your intended audience. 

5) Track and Monitor Conversations.

Even if your brand is not active on social media, chances are online conversations about your brand are occurring on various channels and social networks. If you are not aware of these conversations, in many ways your marketing and communication teams are operating in the dark.

Over the past several years, Twitter has evolved to become the de facto newswire and pulse for real-time conversations, if you know how to use it. Start following relevant conversations about your company and industry. Stay informed of current trends and start identifying who the online influencers are within your particular market space.

Free services from Google, SocialMention and Tweetdeck, and paid services from Radien6 and Crimson Hexagon, allow you to monitor conversations and mentions in real time.

6) Don't Focus on Technology

Digital strategy should fall under the purview of marketing, not IT. This is a classic turf war that will oftentimes cripple your company's digital strategy before it ever gets off the ground. As marketers, we are fascinated by new technology and approaches, and are unusually optimistic that they will work as promised. IT, on the other hand, since they are concerned first and foremost with reliability and security, are typically very conservative when it comes to the adoption of new technology, and as a result are usually a few years behind the curve in terms of what is currently the latest technology or best practices.

Focus instead on what you think are the long-term business objectives are for your brand and identify the most viable solutions that will service that end and can be adopted by others on your marketing team. Make sure that IT is on board to support that initiative.

Although these six strategies are just the tip of the iceberg and will need to evolve over time, they should provide a solid starting point for B2B and service companies to connect with audiences within a rapidly changing landscape.

As the holidays approach, getting into a generous mood wasn’t too difficult when benefiting youngsters in the community is the goal.

Axiom employees got involved after the Houston Fire Department and KPRC-TV Ch. 2 sounded the call for new or gently used toys during the annual “Operation: Stocking Stuffer,” which began Nov. 27 through Dec. 18. Within the span of a week, gifts from employees accumulated on a first-floor desk within the Axiom offices, ranging from small action figures to a bicycle. 

On Wednesday, the gifts were rounded up and transported from historic Fire Station No. 6 at 1702 Washington Ave. to HFD Station No. 6 at 3402 Washington, where HFD personnel graciously accepted them.

According to the Houston Fire Department, last year’s toy drive collected more than 250,000 toys from 90 HFD stations and from various businesses in Houston.

How to install Windows 8 from a USB drive

        
For many enthusiasts there's nothing quite like getting your hands on a shiny new release of Microsoft's Windows operating system. And that's precisely why the web is buzzing with all things Microsoft, as the software giant has made available a Release Preview of its next flagship OS, Windows 8.



The Release Preview is the final pre-release version of Windows 8 and is free to try, but if you want to put it through its paces without donating a blank DVD, here's a brief guide on how to easily install Windows 8 from a USB pen drive.

Here's what you need: a USB pen drive (4GB or greater in size), the Windows 8 Consumer Preview disk image file (64-bit download here, 32-bit download here), Microsoft's Windows 7 USB tool (download here) and a working PC.

Once you have all those, follow these steps:




1. Install and run Microsoft's Windows 7 USB tool. In the subsequent window (pictured below), browse to the 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 8 disk image file you've already downloaded and hit next.


2. With your USB stick plugged in (remember, it'll need to be at least 4GB in size for a 64-bit install), choose USB device as your media type.
3. Select the correct removable device from the drop-down menu, then click begin copying.


4. Sit back, relax, and make a cuppa while the USB tool formats your pen drive, makes it bootable, and copies over all of the Windows 8 files.




5. Once the process is complete, the USB drive can be used to boot a PC and run the Windows 8 setup process.




That's all there is to it. You'll save yourself a blank DVD, the Windows 8 setup process should be quicker from flash-based media, and it's of course a must on netbooks or laptops without an optical drive.

. Today I am going to discuss you about how to perform tasks in Microworkers and earn money. Although there are "Basic jobs" and "Hire jobs", I only consider about the basic jobs as a initial work. How to perform a basic task on Microworkers......?
As I mentioned earlier there are two type of jobs you can participate.
1. Basic jobs
2. Hire jobs.
To do Hire jobs you have to earn good reputation on the Microworkers. Unless you will not able to join group works. For that try to do only the tasks that you can complete properly.






To start your jobs first log in to microworkers here.

Then you can see the the job list show there. From the list of jobs you can find any job as your preference.
As example, I like to select a job like vote, like in Facebook, like in Google plus, sign up like simple task although they give me low income. like 0.1$, 0.12$ per job. Also these jobs are country specific. That is when you make your account you have to select the country. Then you are shown only the relevant jobs for your country. If you are a user in country like US you can earn more.

If you like to select one kind of job only, select the relevant menu and perform all the list given there in selected task. (I think this will help a lot than doing all the jobs because you will be an expert on that type of job and can get good set of opportunities later). But as a fresher to Microworkers, it is better to get good experience by doing all kind of jobs and that will give wide range of opportunities.

How to select a task that can be done.......?
1. First see the list of jobs.

2. There are list of jobs with name of the job, payment, success rate, and number of people done the work.


3. from them it is better to select a task with high success rate and less performance. If possible give some attention to the amount of payments. (You may see less success rate either due to difficulty of task or the high rejection possibility of contractor, but if that is due to the non- rating of the contractor it will not damage your reputation.)

4. After selecting a good task that you can perform, you can select it. Then you will be shown  what you want to do for completing the task. Then read the note correctly and do the work.

5. Please remember to read what you have to submit for prove your task. Because some people ask for something like link step by step. Then remember to collect them too.

6. After completing task complete the form with the data required to prove your work.

7. Confirm the task.

8. You may have to wait few hour for contractors review on your work. Some people will not give you a review soon. Then wait for ending of two weeks you will be automatically get positive feedback.



What can you do if someone has miss-rated you.......?
This will not happen in Microworkers often. But if someone has miss-rated you in wrong way even when you have proven the work properly, you can complain it and have the money.

At last after you get some positive feed backs you will be listed in the Microworkers employers list. To get that work hard and get good reputation. Unless you will loose your jobs.

How To Install Windows 8 From a USB Device


The need to install Windows 8 from a USB device, like a flash drive, is a common one due to the fact that many computers, especially tablets and smaller laptops and desktops, no longer have optical drives.

In other words, that Windows 8 install disc doesn't do you much good if you don't have anywhere to put the DVD! If you want to install Windows 8 from a USB device, you'll need to get those setup files onto a USB device. Unfortunately, simply copying them there won't do.
Windows 8 is also sold as a downloadable ISO file which, if you choose to buy Windows 8 that way, requires some steps to get it properly copied to a flash drive as well.

Regardless of whether you have a Windows 8 DVD you need to get on a flash drive, or a Windows 8 ISO file with the same goal, the following tutorial will help you get the Windows 8 installation files properly copied to a flash drive so you can get on with the installation process.

Note: The following procedure applies equally to Windows 8 (standard) or Windows 8 Pro.

Difficulty: Average


Time Required: Getting the Windows 8 installation files onto a flash drive or other external USB device will take between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on what format your copy of Windows 8 is in right now and how fast your computer is.

Requirements:

A flash drive (4 GB or more) [Check Prices]
A Windows 8 DVD or Windows 8 ISO file
Access to a working computer, with a DVD drive if you have a Windows 8 DVD, with Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP installed
Important: If you have a Windows 8 ISO file and want that on a flash drive, start with Step 2. If you have a Windows 8 DVD and need that on the flash drive, start with Step 1.

Here's How:

Create an ISO file from the Windows 8 DVD. This is the procedure by which you create a single file, called an ISO image, that contains all the data stored on the Windows 8 setup DVD disc.

Once you have an ISO image created from your Windows 8 disc, come back here and continue on with this tutorial which will explain how to get that ISO file onto a flash drive.

Note: If you already know how to create ISO files with your favorite program, often called "ripping," then do so in whatever way you're used to doing it. However, if you've never created an ISO image, or don't have a program installed right now that does it, please see the linked tutorial above for complete instructions on doing so with a free program.

Download the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool from Microsoft and then install it.

This free program from Microsoft properly formats your flash drive and then copies the contents of the Windows 8 installation ISO file you have to that flash drive.

Note: Don't worry that this program has Windows 7 in the title. This program works perfectly well with Windows 8 ISO files and can be installed in Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP.

Start the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool program. You should be able to find the shortcut on the Desktop, as well as in your Start menu or on your Start screen, depending on which version of Windows you installed the program on.

Click Browse on the Step 1 of 4: Choose ISO file screen.

Locate, and then select, your Windows 8 ISO file. Then click or touch Open.

Note: If you downloaded Windows 8 from Microsoft, check your Downloads folder or your Desktop for the ISO image. If you created an ISO image from your Windows 8 DVD, the ISO file will be wherever you created it to.

Click or touch Next.

Choose USB device on the Step 2 of 4: Choose media type screen.

Note: As you can see here, there is also a DVD option. While it doesn't do us much good in this case, since the end game is to get Windows 8's setup files on a flash drive, you could also use this tool to burn a Windows 8 ISO image to a DVD or BD disc.

On the Step 3 of 4: Insert USB device screen, choose from the drop-down box the flash drive or USB-connected external hard drive you want to put the Windows 8 setup files onto and then touch or click Begin copying.

Tip: If you haven't yet plugged in the USB storage device you're planning on using, you can do that now and then touch or click the blue refresh button to make it show up in the list.

Click or touch Erase USB Device if you're prompted to do so on a Not Enough Free Space window. If you don't see this, don't worry, it just means that your flash drive or external hard disk is already empty.

Important: If this message didn't make it apparent, you should know that whatever data you might have on this drive is going to be erased as part of the process of getting the Windows 8 setup files copied.

On Step 4 of 4: Creating bootable USB device, just wait for the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool to prepare the drive and copy the Windows 8 installation files to it.

The first Status you see will be Formatting, which will take anywhere from a few to several seconds, depending on how large the USB drive is that you're using. Next will be Copying files which could take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes, possibly longer, depending on which Windows 8 ISO file you're working from, as well as on how fast your flash drive, USB connection, and computer is.

Tip: Don't worry if the percentage indicator jumps ahead quickly but then sits on a single number for a very long time. While it might not make a lot of sense to behave that way, it doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong.

Assuming everything went as planned, the next screen should say Bootable USB device created successfully with a Status that says Backup completed.

You can now close the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool program window. The flash drive, or other external USB drive you're using, now has the necessary files on it to install Windows 8 and is also properly configured to be booted from.

Boot from the USB device that you just created to start the Windows 8 install process.

Tip: If the Windows 8 setup process doesn't start, it's very likely that you'll need to make boot order changes in the BIOS. See How To Change the Boot Order in BIOS if you need help doing that.

20 apps to give your device a stock Android experience without root [GUIDE]


As we all know, the Android OS is an open platform meaning just about anyone can take the software and do just about whatever they like with it. It’s this reason many handset manufacturers opt to forgo the standard Android design (sometimes referred to as “stock Android”), injecting their own flavor into the OS. I like to think of it like an ice cream shop. While every shop is selling ice cream, they all have their own unique flavors and mixins that go beyond just plain vanilla. Unfortunately, for the kids that don’t want HTC’s rocky road, or Samsung’s cookies n’ cream, there’s little that can be done for those who prefer just plain vanilla.




Yes, for the truly dedicated, there’s always the method of rooting and installing the stock Android OS by way of custom ROMs. Only problem is rooting often times comes at the cost of voiding one’s warranty, buggy software, and even possible harm to the device by way of the dreaded “brick.” If this doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, you’re not alone. But is rooting really the only way to a stock Android experience on your device? Not entirely.



For our lovely Phandroid readers, I put together this handy guide showing you how, with apps downloaded from the Google Play Store, you can obtain a mostly stock Android experience out of your device — all without the worries that come with rooting, hacking, or voiding of warranties. Before we start, keep in mind that some of these applications will not run properly on anything but the firmware they were taken/designed from. For instance, an Ice Cream Sandwich browser will only work on your device if you’re running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, not Gingerbread or Donut. Make sure you read the descriptions of the apps in the Play Store before you download. Now that we got that out of the way, let’s do this.

Launcher




The most dramatic way to get your device looking like it’s running stock Android is by simply replacing its homescreen. In fact, most people will usually stop right there and that’s fine, but it’s only the tip of the Holo iceberg. With so many launcher replacements on the Google Play Store, there are numerous options to choose from. If you want something more closely resembling the stock Android experience (that is the point of this post, after all) you’ll want to stick with all-in-one solutions like Nova Launcher which offers a wide range of customizing options. Where you can find completely stock Jelly Bean launchers on the Play Store, they ain’t gonna help you when it comes to switching up those ugly icons your phone came with. Nova Launcher on the other hand, comes out of the box with Jelly Bean icons allowing for easy themeing of the remnants left behind from your unsavory manufacturer UI. Yay.

Lockscreen




Another key ingredient to the stock Android experience is the first thing you look at upon waking your device — the lock screen. Once again, there are plenty of lockscreen options in the Play Store you can use to get your device looking like it’s running stock Android, the one with a heap of features being Widget Locker. I’ve been using Widget Locker for years now and while there are free lockscreen replacements (linked below), it’s WL’s feature set that keeps me coming back to it. The best part is you can use widgets from other apps, a key component if you want that stock Android 4.2 Jelly Bean clock displayed on your lockscreen.

Camera




Ahhhh, yes. The camera. Chances are there is absolutely nothing wrong with the camera application that comes on your device. In fact, it probably runs perfectly well and comes with sh*t ton of features. There’s only one problem: it ain’t stock. This time around, we have a fewer options for stock Android camera applications from the Play Store, most of which are dependent on the version of Android your device is currently running. Got Ice Cream Sandwich? Well, then you’re going to have to stick to the ICS cameras (linked below). If you’re on Jelly Bean, you’re in luck. The Jelly Bean camera app in this case comes tied to the stock Gallery app. Not sure why it had to be that way, but consider it a 2-for-1 deal.

Gallery




Probably my most frequently used app on my phone is the gallery app. I spend a lot of time in there sharing pics to my various social networks and it pains me when I see anything but minimal look of stock Android gallery app. If you purchased the Jelly Bean camera (linked above), you already got the Jelly Bean gallery app. Good for you. For those that didn’t, or simply didn’t want to bother with using the stock camera app, then you can download the free Ice Cream Sandwich gallery app. This is essentially the same as the Jelly Bean gallery, except you lose the notification bar. I’m sure this wont even bother most of you the way it did me (Jelly Bean FTW).

Messaging



I went nuts when Google finally updated the messaging app in Ice Cream Sandwich. Once a hideously dark and empty experience, is now clean and minimal. It took me awhile, but I was able to find the stock Ice Cream Sandwich messaging app that can be installed on any device running Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean. There’s only one problem — this stock messaging app can’t (at the moment) send off MMS/picture messages, so heavy sexters may want to stick with whatever messaging app is already available on their device. Fooey.

Keyboard




When a manufacturer introduces their custom UI to a device, the first thing almost always kicked to the curb is the stock Android keyboard. This happens so often, you’d logically assume the stock keyboard is just that horrible, right? Couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, Google has done some pretty awesome things with the Android keyboard starting in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich where text is more aggressively corrected, and in Jelly Bean, we even have next word predictions and Gesture Typing. So, there’s a couple of options here for heavy Android texters. You can download one of the modified stock Android keyboards below, or simply go with something like SwiftKey and use the built-in themeing options to make it appear more like stock Android. Either route would work.

Clock




In Android 4.2 Jelly Bean — the absolute latest firmware Android has to offer — Google decided to finally update the stock clock application. They did this by, not only giving the app a much needed visual overhaul, but making it more useful with the inclusion of timer and stop watch functions. One of the visual cues used to see which version of Android a device is running is almost always the stock clock widget, which was also updated in 4.2. Thankfully, a developer has uploaded both the stock clock app, with the included stock clock widget from 4.2 and it looks wonderful. Combine the Jelly Bean clock widget with the Widget Locker lockscreen replacement and you have yourself a faithful recreation of the lockscreen from Android 4.2 (for the most part).

Calculator



The calculator in Android has long needed an update and one crafty developer from the CyanogenMod team took matters into his own hands, introducing a revamped calculator into the Play Store complete with scientific and graphing functions. So, yes. This is in many ways better than the stock app, but still keeps the stock app look. The best part? It’s free to download so hop to it.

Calendar




Another application that’s almost always removed from manufacturer devices is the stock Calendar app. This allows Android OEM’s to introduce their own calendar app, usually heavily skinned and chalk full of features. For those that find the stock Android calendar sufficient — in looks and features — Google has actually made available the stock Android calendar for download in the Play Store. As so often is the case with Google’s apps, it’s available free of charge.

Browser


It was in Jelly Bean that Google made the controversial decision to remove their standard Android web browser (the one introduced all the way back in Honeycomb) from the OS entirely. Instead, they opted for their mobile Chrome browser, which offered better syncing across devices, but many found the browser slow in comparison to the previous version. While downloading Chrome from the Play Store would be the easy way at obtaining a “stock” Android look, the app doesn’t really feature Android’s Holo UI. For those wanting to take things back to the oldschool browser, there is one available from the Play Store, but you gotta be running Ice Cream Sandwich. Bummer. No Jelly Bean love here, folks.

The icing on the cake for obtaining a stock Android look is, of course, using the stock Android wallpapers. While downloading the official wallpapers found in Jelly Bean are easy (zip file provided below), it’s some of the stock live wallpapers that are a little harder to come by. When it comes to the Phase Beam live wallpaper — introduced way back in Ice Cream Sandwich — one thoughtful developer has uploaded the moving wallpaper onto Google Play for everyone to download and enjoy. While it’s not the exact same wallpaper found on stock Android devices, it does a well enough job at recreating the Phase Beam wallpaper, while adding a few tricks as well.

Google caused some buzz a few days ago when they introduced their music discovering app, Sound Search into the Google Play Store. Once reserved for Jelly Bean devices, Sound Search is now available to anyone with a device running Ice Cream Sandwich or above. It’s a great way to discover new music, download, and give your device yet another stock Android feature.

So, that just about concludes this guide. These are always the first apps I download whenever I receive a new device and aside from visiting my settings app, my eyes rarely see any trace of manufacturer UI. I think it’s clear Android manufacturers will never offer a “vanilla” version of the OS with any of their devices. For purists, we have the Nexus program for that. I’m fine with that, I really am. Individuality, options, and choice are good for Android and consumers. Still, there have been a vocal few screaming for manufacturers to make their UI an option (downloadable from the Play Store) and really, I think it’s Google’s responsibility to make this happen. Not by cutting off Play Store access, but simply by offering every single one of their stock Android applications in the Play Store for downloading. This, will give users the choice of downloading and getting a mostly stock Android experience, if they so choose. I’ll step down from my soap box now. Just some food for thought.
